What is the effect of hypertension to heart disease? -

Relationship of hypertension and heart disease.

It is a leading cause of Heart Failure.Here s a quote from a booklet called quot;The Healthy Heart,quot;which was given to a family member when he was hospitalized for CHF(Congestive Heart Failure). quot;When the left chamber(ventricle) of the heart pumps blood into the arteries,they stretch slightly and snap back.This adds enough pressure to move the blood all through the body. If the arteries are normal and stretch easily,there is no extra strain on the left chamber as it pumps.If the arteries are scarred or clogged with fatty deposits,they do not stretch well.Then the heart has to pump harder to force out the blood and extra fluid.This raises the blood pressure.If blood pressure stays high for a long time,the heart s left pumping chamber can become enlarged and weak. Hypertension is a risk factor for the development of coronary artery disease, or blocked blood vessels to the heart. It also can cause/contribute to diastolic dysfunction (aka hypertensive heart disease), which can cause congestive heart failure. When hypertension is severe, it can lead to systolic dysfunction, another cause of congestive heart failure. Blood circulates within the blood vessels under pressure. This pressure normally is about 110 to 135 mm of Mercury (Hg) when the heart contracts, and this is called Systolic Blood Pressure. When the heart relaxes this pressure is about 80 to 85 mm of Hg and this is called Diastolic Blood Pressure. These values are for adults. In children these values are much less. When these normal limits of pressure are exceeded then the condition is called Hypertension (High Blood Pressure). The higher the pressure the severe the Hypertension. According to the severity of the Hypertension, it is categorized into various stages as follows:
