Hope this helps. Hypertension or High Blood Pressure, medical condition in which constricted arterial blood vessels increase the resistance to blood flow, causing an increase in blood pressure against vessel walls. The heart must work harder to pump blood through the narrowed arteries. If the condition persists, damage to the heart and blood vessels is likely, increasing the risk for stroke, heart attack, and kidney or heart failure. Often called the “silent killer,” hypertension usually causes no symptoms until it reaches a life-threatening stage. Hypertension affects 20 percent of people living in the United States. Of these, almost a third are unaware of their condition. Until the age of 55, more men than women have hypertension. After that age, the condition becomes more prevalent in women. Hypertension is significantly more common in African Americans of both sexes than in other racial or ethnic groups.

Hypertension, commonly referred to as quot;high blood pressurequot;, is a medical condition where the blood pressure is chronically elevated. While it is formally called arterial hypertension, the word quot;hypertensionquot; without a qualifier usually refers to arterial hypertension. Hypertension gives the highest risk of heart attack or stroke than any other disease. Persistent hypertension is one of the risk factors for strokes, heart attacks, heart failure and arterial aneurysm, and is a leading cause of chronic renal failure. Hypertension can be classified as either essential or secondary. Essential hypertension is the term used when no specific medical cause can be found to explain a patient s condition. Secondary hypertension means that the high blood pressure is a result of (i.e. secondary to) another condition, such as kidney disease or certain tumors.

Essential hypertension, a systolic blood pressure of 140 mmHg or a diastolic gt;90 on multiple reading in the absence of a specific, identifiable underlying cause. Optimal BP: lt;120/80 Normal BP: lt;130/85 High Normal: 130-139/85-89 Stage 1 Hypertension: 140-159/90-99 Stage 2 Hypertension: 160-179/100-109 Stage 3 Hypertension: gt;180/110
