What are the long terms effect of consuming marijuana everyday? Does it have any high BP (hypertension) link? -

There is some evidence from human studies that long-term marijuana use can have adverse effects, although it seems that the spectrum of these effects is narrower than previously thought and mainly centres around cognitive (intellectual) function. A paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) vol. 287 No. 9, March 6, 2002, pp. 1123-1131) found that long-term cannabis users performed less well than shorter-term users and controls (people who didn’t use cannabis) in tests of memory and attention. The long-term users averaged 23.9 years of use, compared with 10.2 years in the shorter-term users. You can find an abstract at the American Medical Association web site: , but access to the full text requires subscription to the journal. Note that the comments associated with the article (links to them are underneath the abstract) indicate that some other investigators do not agree with this conclusion. Another study published in a Canadian medical journal (CMAJ 2002 Apr 2;166(7):887-91 that: “Current marijuana use had a negative effect on global IQ score only in subjects who smoked 5 or more joints per week. A negative effect was not observed among subjects who had previously been heavy users but were no longer using the substance. We conclude that marijuana does not have a long-term negative impact on global intelligence.” This study compared IQ scores of individuals aged 9-12 years before they started using cannabis, with their scores at 17-20 years. Light users, former users and non-users showed a gain in IQ over the same period. One reason for the decreased IQ and memory in consistent heavy users could be the fact that long-term cannabis use has been found to decrease blood flow to the front areas of the brain (Neurotoxicology and Teratology 2001 Sep-Oct; vol 23 pp. 437-43 Frontal lobe dysfunction in long-term cannabis users by Lundqvist T, Jonsson S, Warkentin S. of the Division of Medical Neurochemistry, Lund University Hospital, 221 85, Lund, Sweden study published in Public Health and Nutrition, June 2001, vol. 4 pp. 781-786 (Dietary intake and nutritional status of US adult marijuana users: results from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. By Smit E, Crespo CJ. of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, SUNY School of Medicine, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY 14214, USA. found that marijuana users have lower levels of carotenoids in the serum. The authors concluded this was associated with different dietary habits: “We found higher cigarette-smoking rates and higher consumption of sodas and alcohol, specifically beer, among marijuana users than among non-current marijuana users. Marijuana users also consumed more sodium, fewer fruits, and more pork, cheese, and salty snacks.” Carotenoids are important anti-oxidants which help to prevent cancer and other diseases. An increased risk of these diseases might be due not so much to marijuana use itself as to the lifestyle led by many who use it. Better attention to nutrition, in order to ensure a good intake of fresh fruit and vegetables, particularly the red, yellow and orange ones, will help to boost antioxidant status (see below) A review of various studies came to the conclusion that: “Regular marijuana use can lead to extensive airway injury and alterations in the structure and function of alveolar macrophages, potentially predisposing to pulmonary infection and respiratory cancer.” Alveolar macrophages are cells in the lungs that help clear away debris and bacteria. (Current Opinions in Pulmonary Medicine, March 2001, vol 7 pp 43-61, Airway effects of marijuana, cocaine, and other inhaled illicit agents. by Tashkin DP of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, UCLA School of Medicine, Los Angeles, California 90095-1690 Again, to counteract these effects, a diet high in antioxidants would be helpful. Obviously, marijuana smoked as joints and mixed with tobacco could carry all the health risks associated with cigarette smoking. The use of marijuana alone might be implicated in cancer. However, one review concluded that: “While there is no doubt that marijuana smoke contains carcinogens, an increase in cancer among users has thus far been anecdotal. Because of the long latent period between cancer induction and initiation of cigarette smoking, the full story is yet to be told.” (International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, July 1998, vol. 1 pp 71-80, Health aspects of cannabis: revisited. by Hollister LE. of Harris County Psychiatric Center, University of Texas-Houston, Houston, TX In support of this statement, I only found one recent paper in Medline describing a case of cancer in one marijuana user. This in itself is not absolute proof. L E Hollister also concluded that: “Many older concerns about adverse effects on health (chromosomal damage, cannabinol psychosis , endocrine abnormalities, cardiac events, impaired immunity) no longer seem to elicit much interest. Continuing concerns about the adverse cognitive effects of chronic use indicate that these can be demonstrated by proper testing; some studies suggest that they may be long-lasting. Although cannabis does not produce a specific psychosis, the possibility exists that it may exacerbate schizophrenia in persons predisposed to that disorder.” i.e. the effects tend to be more on brain function than on other diseases, and it could worsen the status of people who have a tendency to schizophrenia. I have not found anything specific about diet in relation to marijuana use. However, a diet rich in antioxidants will tend to counteract the effect of many toxins and thus would probably be helpful against the toxic effects of marijuana. This is a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, with perhaps additional (although not extreme) intake of vitamins A, C and E. Red wine is also high in antioxidants :) and so is green tea.

I cant join the military!!! white coat hypertension.? -

So i saw my doctor a few months ago, and I was diagnosed with WhiteCoat Hypertension. White Coat hypertension is when a person ONLY has high blood pressure around doctors. ( hence white coat). Its all subconsious so my question is how can I fix this problem. I want to join the armed forces but they will not accept me because of this.

You must meditate right before the doc comes in. I have done it and it brings my BP down a few points. Breathe in deeply and breathe out slowly. Picture what brings you peace like oceans or trees.

The only way to get around this is to ask your doctor to organise a 24 hour blood pressure recording. If you have white coat high blood pressure then this will show that your true readings are actually normal - and should be enough to satisfy the military docs - particularly if you take along a copy of the print outs from the 24 hour readings. Hope that helps More about this kind of stuff at Gordon

What happens if you run with high blood pressure? -

If you run at a pace of say 6.0 on a treadmill for 30 minutes, and you have been diagnosed with hypertension?

normally when you exercise you systolic number goes up temporarily and your diastolic stays the same but if you have hypertension both numbers go way up if you do any rigorous exercise. if you have hypertension at stage 1 or below the best thing is to walk on the treadmill because then it goes only slightly higher then should normally go back down on its own. if you have stage 2 consult a doctor.

it is most likely you would have a heart attack

If it is untreated, it will likely increase during exercise which will cause further damage to kidneys, eyes, not to mention increase risk for heart attack or stroke during the exercise. In the long run, exercise will help lower BP, but you should only exercise if your pressure is under control and your physician says it is okay. They call hypertension the silent killer because often there are no symptoms and people don t truly feel like they are sick so they don t take their meds. I can t tell you how many young (30 s and 40 s) patients I have cared for in the neuro ICU who are comatose because they have ignored their hypertension and now have blown out a vessel in the brain. The best thing to do is talk it over with your doctor...

Sounds like the salty meals are not a good thing. Raising your BP is expected, but maybe not that much for most people. If your resting BP is good, which you added, then the rise during exercise is of less concern. I was just in cardiac rehab, and they explained to me that during exercise, the low vaue drops more, and the upper number goes up along with the heart rate. No more salty meals. You may want to use a heart rate monitor while you run. Your HR should stay constant once you are past your warm-up. If it does, that s good. If after 15 or 20 or 25 minutes its starts to creep upward, then your heart is tiring even though you have not yet noticed. That is a good time to slow down, or slow down and do your cooldown routine and end your workout. Your heart rate should drop 30 pts in 2 minutes, back to normal in 10 minutes after you stop. If it doesn t, your workout is too hard on your heart. Keep those in mind, since they are key indicators of cardiac fitness, and longevity. Also, during a workout, you should never be breathing hard. That also is a sign you can t take it enough oxygen, and have too much CO2 in your blood.

How does a heart attack happen? -

My father died from a heart attack and the doctor said diabetes and hypertesion caused it. My father has been sick for a very long time.. .he died yesterday, I just wanted to know what happens when you have a heart attack and how does diabetes and hypertension cause it?

Heart attack is another name for what is medically known as a myocardial infarction. The muscle in part of the heart is denied blood and dies. Diabetes and hypertension both have circulatory effects on the body and therefore affect the heart. Both these illnesses also cause the body not to deal with lipids (fats) well and that puts a strain on circulation. I am so sorry for the loss of your father. karen, RN

both these inlesses put a huge strain on the heart which is of course a muscle, what happenes when you have a heart attack is the heart can t take it anymore and it stops pumping blood around the body which causes you to try and breath quicker just causing more strain... I am so sorry for your loss, you must be at your wits end, not sure how else can help but heart attacks are really common with these conditions... sorry again.

I m sorry. I lost a neighbor last Friday from a heart attack while mowing his lawn, he was only 59 and slim! If you have a family history, you need to do research on the internet so you can prevent it from happening to you! I think the key is to eat healthy, moderate regular exercise, don t smoke and have your cholesterol checked regularly. I know this sounds boring to a teen or young adult. But it ll save your life one day. You can abuse yourself..party, drink, eat junk, smoke for only so long...then you start having problems.

My answer would have been the same as the response above.

Which specilist treats hypertension patients? -

I am 24years old male suffering with hypertension amp;thyriod. I am a student. I am getting my treatment with a cardiologist for hypertension. The doctor done all the tests and said that all the reports are normal. And he prescribed me Amlopres 5mg tablet to take daily. my BP is 140/100. The doctor did not tell me the exact reason. If my reports r normal y should i take the tablets. Now its been 11months there is no change in my Blood pressure. i want to know that is the cardiologist the right doctor to treat me for my hypertension?

Cardiologist for hypertension and endocrinologist for the diabetes.

Get a second opinion, your BP is still considered high according to the new standards.

I have high blood pressure/hypertension keepin 150/90 with drugs at 45 what are my chances of reducing this? -

Would welcome reply from other hypertension patients and good and kindly doctors

My husband s BP was a bit higher than yours. He started with a prescription of 40 mg Benicar. It only helped a little. He is slightly overweight and 53 years old. He is now walking briskly for 30-60 minutes a day (started with 15 slowly). He takes multi-vitamins amp; minerals including nutritional yeast. Garlic helps move fat from the blood and body. I began cooking with garlic and he also takes an odorless supplement. He takes CO Q10 and Taurine, Salmon Oil, Soy products. He used to love milk and would drink up to a gallon a day. I switch him to Silk Soy Milk which he really likes. I try to get him to eat more fruits and vegetables. He drastically reduced his caffeine intake. It s been about 3 months and his blood pressure readings are consistently between 128/75 to 118/63. He stays on the Benicar and his doctor is really happy. Something is working. Good Luck .

U have to walk regularly for atleast 3kms in the morning and if it is good atmosphere it is better.Reduce salt and heavy cholestral items in food.If u do some yoga ur hypertension will be reduced.Even in the busy schedule,if u allot time for doing this, helps better for ur healthy life.(these were done amp; proven by my father)

I think you will find this FAQ on hypertension helpful http://drchander.com/Answers%20to%20ques...

yes you should do some exercise, diet modification and reduce salt coz it causes your BP to increase. and as much as possible avoid stress. i think your BP is still high even with the drugs. you should keep a BP diary. monitor it daily and then go back to your doctor for consult. show your BP diary so he could adjust your medications. either increase the dosage or add another anti hypertensive medication.

As an ex-drug rep who used to call on cardiologist I can tell you that all of the literature suggest that the only thing which can drop blood pressure with the exception of drug therapy is weight loss. To that extent, what is your weight and do you exercise regularly? This lifestyle check is probably the single most important thing you can do to help with your condition. A healthy diet, daily exercise and common sense can do a lot to help. Additionally, I would encourage you to see a cardiologist or a nephrologist about your condition. Nephrologist are really hypertension experts because of hypertensions association with the kidney. Really challenge these physicians to get your blood pressure to goal which is 120/80 and don t let up until they do. These guys see so many people with hypertension that after a while I really believe they become numb to it - like an accountant preparing a tax return. Lastly, there is a document published called: quot; The Joint National Commission on the Treatment and Evaluation of Hypertensionquot; better known as just the JNC. I would guess that it is now in its 7th, or 8th version... i.e. JNC VII. This talks all about the various treatment protocalls of hypertension although it may be a bit much for you liking as it is technical.

Are you getting daily exercise? regular moderate exercise (brisk walking) and losing even 10 pounds (if you are overweight) can help reduce blood pressure. Eat lots of fruit and veg, one glass of red wine a day. Lots of lifestyle things you can do, if you aren t already doing those things, that is.

Other answers suggesting exercise, weight loss, and diet change are good and you should do them but you also should be discussing this with your doctor. It may be necessary to change your medications or add an additional one if lifestyle changes don t help enough

Is it normal for a dermatologist to prescribe a Beta Blocker and antihistamine medication at the same time? -

My boyfriend has no previous history of hypertension or angina, last week he presented hives presumably related to stress. He was prescribed Loratadine and Propanolol, but I just don t understand why the Propanolol. He is allergic to aspirin and penicylin, I am afraid he might get even worse with an additional ingredient to the mix.

Its darned near impossible to second guess a treatment plan without knowning all of the details. That said, these two medications are a common treatment for a condition called cholenergic urticaria. Blood pressure or angina are not the only reasons someone might perscribe a beta blocker. I hope this helps. Good luck.

I was recently put on Metoprolol for blood pressure, and Im stuffed up and need a decongestant. Suggestions? -

I ve heard that certain cold/decongestant medicines can raise your blood pressure and if you are on certain medications that could be bad. Does anyone know a good decongestant to take that I can buy at the pharmacy that is OK to take with Metoprolol (hypertension/blood pressure medicine)? Thanks!

Go to a pharmacy and ask a pharmacist. Or call your doctor.

It is not advisable to take medications not prescribed for you especially when you re taking heart medications. It would be to your safety to check with your doctor on what medication to take, or you can try natural ways of de-clogging your nose such as steam vaporizer. If you have a fever, then that is a different matter entirely since it may be a viral or bacterial infection, which needs more than a decongestant to cure.

Topcare has side effect on BP.

Do i have hypertension? -

i have been picking my nose alot and it hurt then for like 24 hour it start to bleed and i have been sneezing alot and i sneeze out blood is my nosebleed cause by hypertension or something else

Picking your nose is probably the reason its bleeding. Excessive sneezing could be due to allergies especially at this time of year. Hypertension is hard to spot without having your BP checked as usuallty there are no symptoms. When there are however they usually start with a throbbing headache that begins in the morning but gets better as the days goes on. Yes nosebleeds can also be a sign but how old are you? Is there a hystery of HT in the family? Heart problems? Are you generally well? Are you a drug user. Im afraid this is impossible t o answer without checking your BP so go get it done. No GP I know would mind you popping in for that and remember a high result once can be due to stress, you need 3 diastolics over 100 to be considered clinically hypertensive. Good luck

What is high blood pressure? High blood pressure (hbp) or hypertension means high pressure (tension) in the arteries. Arteries are vessels that carry blood from the pumping heart to all the tissues and organs of the body. High blood pressure does not mean excessive emotional tension, although emotional tension and stress can temporarily increase blood pressure. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80; blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89 is called quot;pre-hypertensionquot;, and a blood pressure of 140/90 or above is considered high. The top number, the systolic blood pressure, corresponds to the pressure in the arteries as the heart contracts and pumps blood forward into the arteries. The bottom number, the diastolic pressure, represents the pressure in the arteries as the heart relaxes after the contraction. The diastolic pressure reflects the lowest pressure to which the arteries are exposed. http://www.medicinenet.com/high_blood_pr...

high blood pressure relates to blood pressure readings....the nosebleed is more than likely related to nose picking

Can you feel hypertension? -

Most people- doctors etc. say it s quot;silent killerquot;.....But everytime my blood pressure begins to rise, I actually feel it. I get dizzy, unbalanced, heart races, and I feel as if a rock lies on my head. Especially when I get mad or angry. I feel my heart beating harder with force. Can you feel your blood pressure rise?

When your Heart rate increases, also increases the cardiac output, so more blood is pumped form the heart to the whole body, in Hypertension the pressure of blood is higher because of the contraction of the blood vessels and as a result patients can experience headaches because of the high pressure of blood in the wall of veins and arteries, arteries supply the heart and veins supply the body. If you are diagnosed as a hypertensive you should be on medications to control it, and you should reduce the intake of salt in food because Sodium increases the retention of salt and water in the body developing as a result Hypertension. Good Luck

Yes. I am close to three people w/ high blood pressure. They definitely feel it when it rises during times of tension, and I can SEE it, in that their face gets really red and they just don t look well. Scary stuff! Definitely keep your blood pressure monitored at home. Find out your quot;triggers, quot; whether they be social situations, family conflict, certain foods, whatever! Read up on a healthier diet and lifestyle. And find a doctor you trust. If your current doc seems to think your symptoms are all quot;in your head, quot; find a new physician! Good luck and be well.

The way you have described it...are the ways at which you can tell if your blood pressure is high. I suggest you begin tracking your blood pressure especially when it quot;feelsquot; high so that you can determine if you are in a risk group for high blood pressure. You dont have the capability to quot;feelquot; what you actuall pressures are...like 128/80 for example. If it consistantly over 140 (top number/systolic), begin mild/moderate cardio exercises like walking/jogging. If an exercise program does not lower it, consider serious diet modifications second...and drugs lastly.

What you are feeling is the effects of your sympathetic nervous system (emergency response system) working and one of the many jobs it does is give your blood pressure a temporary lift. It does lots of other things too, like increasing heart rate, making you sweat and setting adrenaline courseing through your blood and generally getting you ready for some physical action (fight or flight). You certainly will feel that lot. Essentially what is going on is that your heart and other body parts are getting ready for some emergency action, so the heart s effort shoots up and this fills your muscles with fresh fuel and oxygen to work hard and supercharges your brain which will take charge of the action. All that blood shooting into your head will make it pound. It also gives you hyper-concentration (seeing red or tunnel vision) which can make you feel a bit dizzy, but actually you re not in danger of falling over - quite the reverse, you are hyper aware and physically charged. Raised blood pressure on its own, without that stimulus is quite another matter. It would have to be really high to feel its effect in isolation and even then, when it is raised for a long time, you get used to it and don t notice it - hence the silent killer thing. Generally then, you can feel the effects that accompany rising BP as your sympathetic nervous system goes to work (e.g. becuase something made you angry), but not the BP itself.

yeah, weak like your out of breath and about to pass out. not fun.

Decribe the health teaching of a client with hypertension? -

First of all, find out what they already know. This is a good time to clear up any misconceptions. Go over the causes, and explain all the relevant physiology, how the vascular system works, etc. This is a good time to bring out the pictures, or draw some as you go along. Then head on out to the prescribed treatment, explain how it works and the most common side effects. This is a good time to ID for possible noncompliance with the treatment and nip it in the bud. For instance, many people won t comply because the don t actually feel sick. Then, go into non-pharmacological interventions, such as dietary treatment (freshwater fish is very, very good...mmm tuna!). Talk about stress reduction, esp. if your client is a type a personality. Let the client know that OTC agents/vitamins/herbs etc can be a good thing but they need to discuss with MD, because it is very possible for them to get their BP too low. Teach the client how to take their own BP, and provide a list of warning signs so they know when to contact MD. Emphasize the s/s of stroke. Finish up by evaluating and reteaching as necessary. Good luck!

First of all you need to discuss possible causes such a genetic, stress, diet, etc. Then individually brain storm to figure ways to alleviate some or all of causes and minimize the others ie genetic. Discuss with client need for life style change if called for and addition of medications if uncontrolled otherwise. Basically, any health care professional would need to know more about the HTN client too set-up teaching. Good luck with the teaching.

After medication, drs. often prescribe stress and anger management, yoga, anything that will relax you, as this will work with in conjunction with any meds.,

Stage 2 Hypertension diet? -

I just started at a gym to being getting back into shape and when I was with the personal trainer she did my assessment and now found that I have stage 2 hypertension. She took my blood pressure which was: 171/110 with a pulse of 80bpm a few mins. later 168/108 Well, needless to say she wasn t able to provide anymore more training till I get this lowered. So I have made an appt. with my doctor and will probably be on some meds, but here is my question: I have extremely poor eating habits, so what is a good diet for me to permanently try and maintain so that this does not get worse? also looking to totally revamp my eating style so I also eat less. Currently I weigh 210, 30/years old

A nutritionist is the best person to help You with the right diet for You. As for now, You may look up something called the quot; DASH quot; diet for people with hypertension problem. The following two links will be helpful: href="are also just some natural ways to lower hypertension but the true question is if You are willing to commit yourself to following them. First of all if You don’t eat garlic add it to your daily diet. Doctors recommend eating up to three or four cloves of garlic every day. Experiment with ways to use garlic in soups, salads and sauces. Prepare the cloves in a variety of different ways such as slicing, chopping, mincing or smashing them. You can even make garlic into garlic butter to spread on toast and crackers. If all else fails and you simply cannot stomach garlic or do not like what it does to your breath, check your local grocery store or pharmacy for garlic supplements. Other natural ways to lower blood pressure when it comes to eating include reducing how much fat and salt you consume, as well as fatty and fried foods. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis as you can, preferably five to ten servings. Vegetables that you should increase your consumption of include Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cabbage. Not only will they do your heart good, but these leafy green vegetables are believed to be excellent at preventing and fighting cancer. Other natural ways to lower blood pressure include taking the time to exercise every day and preferably for 30 minutes a day if not more. Exercise helps keep the arteries clear of fatty build up and it encourages blood to freely flow through the body as it is meant to. Not only that but exercise releases endorphins in the brain which are “feel good” hormones that, as the name implies make up feel happy and good. Those who are currently inactive should start off slow. Do small things such as taking the stairs or going for a short walk on your lunch break and work up to other physical activities such as longer walks or time spent in the gym. Mildly active people should seek to incorporate more exercise into their routine as well as devising an exercise schedule they can stick to. Those who are already very active are doing their heart plenty of good already. It is important to always do warm ups and cool downs in order not to injure muscles as well as to vary the types of exercises you do to avoid boredom. Natural ways to lower blood pressure also includes what is sometimes referred to as “emotional rebalancing.” This involves many aspects of one’s emotional and mental well being such as finding ways to manage stress, learning to assert oneself, practicing effective methods of relaxation, setting goals that are within your reach and finding ways to be as good to yourself as possible. Natural ways to lower blood pressure include all non-medicinal forms of treatment and sometimes you need to do a variety of the above to help normalize your blood pressure. Also, You may consider taking supplements of Magnesium and Niacin. Good Luck !

Hi i am suffering from blood presure (hypertension)about 80/160 what to do please help me.? -

which medecine is good for me ayurvedic or aelopathic.

Check out this web page - I hope it helps!

I’ll suggest you to use Ayurvedic medicine along with yoga exercises. The reason for hypertension cannot be found but can be traced to mental activities. High mental stress results in high blood pressure. Modern medical science treats blood pressure but not the underlying reason that is mental strain. Medicine alone cannot cure high blood pressure permanently. The best remedy for High blood pressure is regular yoga practice that removes the underlying reason i.e. mental stress amp; strain. It would help you to achieve stress free mind. Regular yoga practice helps you in relaxation removing all the strains on mind and controls the mental activities.

I hear that celery stalks are good for high blood pressure. (By the way, you probably mean that your blood pressure is 160/80...not the other way around). Also, check out www.mercola.com for great information. I, personally, would let allopathic medicine be my final choice as your blood pressure, although high, may be controllable with lifestyle changes.

I take Lisinoprl with Hydrochlorothazide, it helps water retension. I dont know yours.

What is benign hypertension? -

a slight elevation in blood pressure that is of no negative consequence...it won t cause any permanent damage and doesn t need any treatment

There is really no such thing as quot;benignquot; hypertension, because high blood pressure is always potentially dangerous. The only thing I can think of is benign intracranial hypertension, referring to an increased pressure in the brain which isn t caused by any kind of growth. In medical terms quot;benignquot; is a word used to describe something that isn t cancerous. The word quot;benignquot; in regular language means quot;harmlessquot;, but of course, medically speaking, when a thing is quot;benignquot; it just means not as bad as if it was cancer. But that still doesn t mean that it is entirely harmless. Far from it. Benign Intracranial Hypertension (BIH) seems to occur more frequently in obese women, and there is a danger of vision loss They confirm diagnosis with a brain scan, and then treat the patient by tapping off excess cerebrospinal fluid, and, I believe, sometimes drugs to reduce the production of this fluid.

Benign essential hypertension is the formal traditional name for the high blood pressure people generally talk about. Though people with the disorder have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease over time, there is no immediate danger. This distinguishes the quot;benignquot; from quot;malignantquot; hypertension, which is associated with immediate end-organ damage, and must be treated aggressively on an emergency basis. These patients are obviously sick, where those with benign essential hypertension have quot;the silent killerquot; and normally have no symptoms. The quot;essentialquot; part basically distinguishes the condition from those illnesses in which the elevated blood pressure is a sign of something else, such as renal artery stenosis or some hormone-secreting tumors, that can often be surgically corrected.

How to manage hypertension with my diet? -

See site below. http://phifoundation.org/angina.html

How does one increase levels of HDL and decrease triglycerides and VLDL without drugs? -

HDL 31 mg/dl Triglycerides 320 mg/dl VLDL 64 mg/dl Type 2 Diabetes under control with oral drugs (semiglynase and metformin) Hypertension under control with beta blockers with hydrazide and other drugs (amilodipine, ramipril)

Triglycerides come from Carbohydrates, not fat. Cut out all carbohydrates except those from non starchy vegetables. Your Triglycerides will fall, your CHD will improve, and you will not need any drugs for Type II diabetes. Watch the fruit and eliminate the grains. Increase in HDL comes from saturated and mono saturated fat. Increase in LDL comes from trans-fats and vegetable oils. VLDL is a dangerous form of cholesterol that your body makes when you eliminate all dietary cholesterol. Eat your eggs every day. Follow this advise and you will CURE your diabetes, lose weight, eliminate your BP meds, live longer. You can follow the advice others will give, but that is probably what you have been doing. Do you know anyone who eats a low fat diet who has lowered their numbers? Yes, you can lower them temporarily, but once your body figures out what you are doing, it just makes more. Cholesterol is that important to life. Never take drugs to lower your cholesterol as artificially lowered blood levels have NEVER been shown to benefit CHD. Every cholesterol drug ad has a disclaimer stating just that. Look up any ad, you will find it. Worse yet, you might die sooner from cancer, stroke, infection. Or trigger ALS, Alzheimer s, or dementia, ED. Such a deal. Pharmacist who s life was almost ruined by Lipitor

It s weird the way so many people have this idea in their head about quot;not wanting to take any drugsquot;. I ve got news for you pal, all this quot;diet and exercisequot; stuff is no match to your genetics. You can turn yourself into Lance Armstrong (and let s face it, you ain t even coming close) and your HDLs will still be too low and your LDLs will still be too high. The answer is to take a proven drug like Zocor. You have DM II... You have hypertension... most likely you are morbidly obese, don t you kid yourself into thinking you re going to exercise your way out of this. You are well on your way towards heart disease and worse. Wake up and get to your doctor about going on a statin and stop living in fantasyland about this quot;without drugsquot; crap.

Just monitor your bodyfat, insulin, stress, blood pressure, homocysteine and nitric oxide levels Do not worry about cholesterol. It is a scam.

Get more exercise, eat less sugar, eat more protein. Drink more water is the most important.

What meds do they give to a person when they are going through alcohol detox? -

I have a friend who is an alcholoic. She also suffers from hypertension and anxiety and panic attacks. She is on a host of meds for the hypertension and ativan for the anxiety and panic attaacks. She wants to stop drinking but cannot find a hospital due to her insurance. She also doesnt have the money to go to a rehab hospital so I was curious what meds they would give her, and if she can do this by possibly increasing the ativan

Treat Panic Attacks and Anxiety: :)

Iam married for 6 six years and still working really hard to concieved, my husband has an hypertension and taking hypertension medicine for six years,im really eager to have a child and work out things for the family way....its a shame here in the philippines when you cant bear a child and its quite frustrating waiting for it to come, my husband also works on the field and he comes home only twice a week and always driving, i hope you could give me some advice cause im really getting frustrated and sad!

Sometimes couples get confused about the best time to have sex in relationship to ovulation. You have a small window of time each month to get pregnant. Ovulation is usually about 14 days after the women s last period. After a woman ovulates the egg will survive approximately 24 hours. Sperm, on the other hand, will live for up to three to five days. This is why having sex two to three days before ovulation will increase your chances of getting pregnant. Don’t wait until the day you ovulate to have sex. Your partner’s sperm will last longer than your egg and you don’t want to miss an opportunity by waiting. The missionary position is a good position to use when trying to get pregnant. Avoid positions where the woman is on top. Gravity will allow sperm to leak out with these positions. Also try placing a pillow under your hips to help tilt your pelvis and keep the sperm in longer. Don’t get up right after sex. Try to relax and allow the sperm to stay in the vagina as long as possible. And also if there s a chance your husband has a low sperm count, he needs not to masturbate the whole time he s away from you.

No orphans there that need parents? In your area you def do not need more kids....you need to take care of the kids you have. You are very selfish to want your quot;ownquot; child when people from other countries are supporting the unwanted children in your country.

I am 33. Have history of hypertension. Now diagnosed with Moderately enlarged LV, Ectatic aorta 3.4cm. Explain? -

Moderately hypertrophied LV and Moderately enlarged LV wall thickness with Ectatic aorta 3.4 cm diameter. I exercise atleast 20 minutes a day. No chest pain or other symptoms...

Uncontrolled hypertension can cause a plethura of health problems; mainly heart problems, including enlargement of the heart. My advice would be to watch your diet, keep exercising, and stay on any blood pressure meds that you may be on. If you can t manage to keep your blood pressure down, you ll only develop more problems. Unfortunately, that s about all I know to tell you. If you want specific explanations to your test results, MAKE your doctor explain them to you. That s their JOB. You are a consumer and paying for his/her service, so don t hesitate to ask them to help you understand. Good luck to you:)

Is pulse stronger in people with hypertension? -

Arterial stiffness is a strong determinant of cardiovascular risk. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is an index of arterial stiffness, and its prognostic value has been repeatedly emphasized. Pulse wave velocity (PWV), an index of arterial wall stiffness, is modulated by blood pressure (BP). Whether heart rate (HR) is also a modulator of PWV is controversial. Recent researches involving mainly patients with high aortic PWV have found either no change or a positive correlation between the two. Study results demonstrate that even in patients with a low degree of atherosclerosis, HR is a potential modulator of carotid-femoral PWV. Cardiovascular risk may differ significantly from one individual to the next, which has an impact on calculations based on part of the cardiovascular risk factors only. I suffer from hypertension and my pulse wave velocity is always normal. Personally my hypertension doesn’t interfere with heart pulse. No matter what your age, strive to reduce systolic blood pressure to less than 140 mm Hg. Systolic blood pressure should become the principal focus for the detection, evaluation, and treatment of hypertension, especially in middle-aged and older people. Talk to your doctor, he can give you more detailed information. Take care always! Mar

nope. just have their blood pressure measured. my pulse was weak when mine was untreated with a pulse of 50 bpm resting.

What causes adrenal gland retaining too much sodium in the body? -

It s the most common problem of high BP in 1/4 population and not all family s members have hypertension from this, so is it pathological disease? thanks.

The body may be releasing too much of the hormone Aldosterone. Aldosterone causes sodium reabsorption throughout the body, and since kidneys are our bodies filtering systems, the reabsorption takes place there. There may just be a hormonal imbalance, which should be checked out by a doctor too. I m only offering one possibility, so there may be more.

High High Blood Pressure linked to weight gainer and protein drinks? -

Im taking weight gainer 1850, and muscle milk and my blood pressure is prehypertension, and some time hypertension, and Im only 15?

Could be genetics too. Does your mum or father have high blood pressure? I have it and im in fine shape

There are millions of people that take whey protein and there is no scientific proof that they are linked.. It could be an internal problem on your part, or even more likely your diet aside from the protein.

Why does having a high diastolic increase your risk of a stoke? -

while having a high systolic increases your risk of a MI? I don t have hypertension, I just want to know and I can t find it in the book.

diastolic is the pressure between the beats of the heart, or when the heart is at rest, the higher that pressure the greater the strain on the walls of blood vessels and the greater the risk of stroke.

Is it true hypertension can cause blindness? -

I think i have hypertension 3 month ago i went to a lap for blood test pressure was 136/90 pulse/min 80 they told me watch my cholesterol and then a few weeks back my office had a medical check pressure 130/87 pul/min 76 they told me cut down on eggs.Recently even my eyesight been very sensitive to the sun and also burly at times a year ago my vision was almost 20/20.I m also stress out a lot, then i read up a article about hypertension and read it cause blindness? What i would like to know is if i do have hypertension can all this be cure if i start treating it or em i in really big trouble will i lose my sight?I m too late?? Pls answer honestly.

No you are not too late. Fact is 130/90 is not as high to require medication in most cases. Just some changes in lifestyle keep the blood pressure under control. As for blindness due to hypertension - yes, you are right. Hypertension is known to cause retinopathy - thickening of the arteries of retina (eye screen). Uncontrolled high blood pressure can cause even bleeding from these arteries. This condition may be symptomless or may result in blurring of vision and at times loss of vision. Interestingly, this change in vision is reversible by treating the hypertension by medication and lifestyle measures. Hope this honest answer helps wity your anxiety.

Horse-feathers! Report Abuse

You ve been mis-led. Glaucoma will cause blindness, but it s quite different. Glaucoma is excessive pressure in the eye fluids, ... NOTHING to do with your blood pressures (which are FINE). Also, disregard almost everything you read in books about hypertension. It s nearly all wrong. If you have problems with your eyes then go have your eye-pressures tested by all means, by an ophthalmic lab. or hospital.. But forget blood pressure.

Change doctors, for god s sake. This one is nuts. Your blood pressure is borderline high, you should be on a mild medication, watching your weight and exercising. Other than that, no worries. This dude is going to GIVE you high blood pressure worrying about it. Im a nurse 25 years and have never seen anyone blind from hypertension. If your eyes are extremely sensitive to light lately, see an ophthalmologist anyway.

= scared hypersensitive enegue, go to the web, google, and look into the articles, not for the professionals but for the lay intelligent sufferers and nurses and paramedics, about HBP, and any other doubt you have. you seem to be the gullible type who will fall into the clutches of any t..d...and h.... who will look into your palm in the sleeper coach and tell all about you. answer 1 from ? and 2 from student nurse and her fully qualified Nurse boy friend are good for a start. Get a family doctor a new young mbbs to care for you as long as he doesnt make experiments w you. and your retina and lens.

how old are u? your blood pressure is in a normal range for an adult. as is your pulse rate. it would only be a problem if you have any other heart problems. for blood pressure to cause blindness the top figure would most likely be above 200. you do not have hypertension. also the egg comment is a bit random. you need to relax and ask your docter to explain things better to you. as from what you have said you thre is nothing to worry about. your eyesight problems are unlikesly to be linked as if you go blind due to high blood pressure its caused by the vessels in your eyes bursting. also, your blood pressure can usually be reduced just by following a healthy life style, exercise especially. relax. you are fine. xxxx

Can Primary hypertension be benign? -

NO, longstanding hypertension may lead to cardiac hypertrophy (an enlarged heart) which in turn lead to heart disease or other vascular problems (even death). Try going to see a chiropractor. Yes a Doctor of Chiropractic. They adjust (realign) the spine which contains the spinal cord. The nervous system is the master system in the body. If there is a dysfunction in the way it communicates it can cause somatic problems (problems in the body). There are also arteries which pass through the vertebra in the neck, if a bone is misplaced may increase pressure (like a water hose when squeezed). Check youtube for chiropractic and high blood pressure if this link does not work. Also check all the other things its helping people with like talk show host Montel Williams. Stay safe and be healthy!! http://www.youtube.com/results?search_qu...

Hoodia and Hypertension? -

Is it ok to take hoddia, in any form, if one has mild hypertension and taking Diovan ?

Hoodia works on the hypothalamus in the brain. This is very different from most diet pills. Hoodia would probably be your best choice when it comes to diet pills but you should definitely check with you doctor first.

I would go with Alli (orlistat) it has FDA approval for the treatment of obesity. It is a reversible inhibitor of gastric and pancreatic lipases, thus inhibiting absorption of dietary fats by 30% (at doses of 120 mg 3 times/day). The most common side effect is a loose/oily stool. It is safe to take with Diovan.

the research is not done on hoodia s safety, but it is NOT a stimulant like other diet pills,,,no ephedra in it. I take diovan as well and have to be very careful with taking what would seem harmless to others, such as advil and cold medicines. I would ask your doctor first or at least wait until some more research is done.

As Andrew mentioned, given the way hoodia works it is by far the safest diet pill you could take given your hypertension and medications you are taking. However, I hate to use the word quot;diet pillquot; when it comes to hoodia because it s actually a natural appetite suppressant that simply tricks your brain into thinking you are full. In other words, it s not like your usual diet pill that acts like a stimulant. I work closely with a doctor named Joseph Varallo. He has over two years of clinical experience with hoodia. He has actually seen instances when hoodia - when combined with diet and exericse - has in indirect effect on lowering blood pressure. You can read about all the positive results he s seen with hoodia in the past two years by reading this article: you want a definitive answer, I would encourage you to visit the new hoodia forum Dr. Varallo and I recently launched. There is an quot;ask the doctorquot; section in the forum where you can ask Dr. Varallo this question and he will answer it for you. I m sure he s familiar with Diovan. I m also confident he will tell you that hoodia is o.k. to take given your condition, but I can t speak for him. Here is the link to our forum: you should definitely talk to your own doctor first. Just be sure that if and when you decide to try hoodia, buy only authentic hoodia. In my 1+ years of research of hoodia, there are only 3 brands right now that I recommend because I know they have 100% authentic hoodia gordonii. They are Desert Burn, Hoodoba, and Hoodia Hoodia. You can read more about these brands by visiting this page if you are interested: of luck to you. Travis

Patient with hypertension has a creatinine of 1.4, is this any dangerous with occasionally high bp? -

age is 80 years, one sister with high bp but controlled, hypertension for teh last nine years or so, not more than that usually controlled with medicine, but sometimes it shoots to 200/110, very rare, but usually controlled in 135/90 range hast creatinine checked was 1.4 i am concerned about the renal issues, can it cause renal faiure please advice how to avoid it and to normalize creatinine back to normal God bless you

Many foods can increase creatine levels, since its a natural substance . Do a search, then limit those foods. From Wikipedia - In humans, approximately half of stored creatine originates from food (mainly from fresh meat and fish). Since vegetables do not contain creatine, vegetarians clearly show lower levels of muscle creatine which, upon creatine supplementation, rise to a level higher than in meat-eaters

How does high blood pressure hurt my kidneys? High blood pressure makes your heart work harder and, over time, can damage blood vessels throughout your body. If the blood vessels in your kidneys are damaged, they may stop removing wastes and extra fluid from your body. The extra fluid in your blood vessels may then raise blood pressure even more. It s a dangerous cycle. High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of kidney failure , also commonly called end-stage renal disease (ESRD). People with kidney failure must either receive a kidney transplant or go on dialysis. Every year, high blood pressure causes more than 25,000 new cases of kidney failure in the United States Creatinine is a breakdown product of creatine, which is an important part of muscle. A serum creatinine test measures the amount of creatinine in the blood. Creatinine can also be measured with a urine test. Normal Results A normal value is 0.8 to 1.4 mg/dL. Females usually have a lower creatinine than males, because they usually have less muscle mass. Note: Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories. Talk to your doctor about the meaning of your specific test results Why the Test is Performed The test is done to evaluate kidney function. If kidney function is abnormal, creatinine levels will increase in the blood, due to decreased excretion of creatinine in the urine. Creatinine levels also vary according to a person s size and muscle mass Hypertension if not treated with medications ; diet and exercise can lead to renal failure. Her creatinine level of 1.4 is within the normal range. Her blood pressure averaging at 135/90 is good with medications; even though the diastole at 90 is still slightly high. How can I prevent high blood pressure from damaging my kidneys? If you have kidney damage, you should keep your blood pressure below 130/80. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), recommends that people with kidney disease use whatever therapy is necessary, including lifestyle changes and medicines, to keep their blood pressure below 130/80. How can I control my blood pressure? NHLBI has found that five lifestyle changes can help control blood pressure: =Maintain your weight at a level close to normal. Choose fruits, vegetables, grains, and low-fat dairy foods. =Limit your daily sodium (salt) intake to 2,000 milligrams or lower if you already have high blood pressure. Read nutrition labels on packaged foods to learn how much sodium is in one serving. Keep a sodium diary. =Get plenty of exercise, which means at least 30 minutes of moderate activity, such as walking, most days of the week. =Avoid consuming too much alcohol. Men should limit consumption to two drinks (two 12-ounce servings of beer or two 5-ounce servings of wine or two 1.5-ounce servings of quot;hardquot; liquor) a day. Women should have no more than a single serving on a given day because metabolic differences make women more susceptible to the effects of alcohol. =Limit caffeine intake. Are there medicines that can help? Many people need medicine to control high blood pressure. Two groups of medications called ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors and ARBs (angiotensin receptor blockers) lower blood pressure and have an added protective effect on the kidney in people with diabetes. Additional studies have shown that ACE inhibitors and ARBs also reduce proteinuria and slow the progression of kidney damage in people who do not have diabetes. You may need to take a combination of two or more blood pressure medicines to stay below 130/80. Your doctor may also prescribe a diuretic in addition to your ACE inhibitor or ARB. Diuretics are also called quot;water pillsquot; because they help you urinate and get rid of excess fluid in your body.

Sometimes, in the elderly, an elevated creatinine is due to dehydration. But keep a close watch on the kidneys.

What is the term used to describe elevated blood pressure when standing? -

I thought it was postural hypertension but all definitions describe that its when blood pressure falls when standing... the exact opposite :(

Hi Gabby, postural HYPOTENSION is when the blood pressure suddenly drops if you stand up quickly. High blood is just referred to as primary or secondary HYPERTENSION It doesn t tend to suddenly go up when standing. If blood pressure is high then it is high. But as a guideline anything HYPER is high and anything HYPO is low. Hope this helps. love mel.X

My blood pressure also is elevated when I stand, by 20 pts or more. I ve been having lightheadedness amp; blackouts for months now. In addition, arms amp; legs go to sleep in situations they otherwise shouldn t, like while driving even if only for 20 minutes. Dr is testing for me for ms Report Abuse

I know of no term to describe elevated blood pressure with standing. However, there is the term quot;orthostaticquot; hypotension which means blood pressure lowers when changing positions.

I got hypertension and diabeter. Can I take viagra? -

Viagra is absorbed and processed rapidly by the body and is usually taken 30 minutes to 1 hour before intercourse. Results vary depending on the cause of erectile dysfunction, but studies have shown that Viagra is effective in 75% of cases. It helps men with erectile dysfunction associated with diabetes mellitus (57%), spinal cord injuries (83%), and radical prostatectomy (43%). In clinical studies, Levitra has been shown to work quickly, provide consistent results, and improve sexual function in most men the first time they take the drug. It also has shown to be effective in men of all ages, in patients with diabetes mellitus, and in men who have undergone radical prostatectomy. Cialis has been shown in clinical trials to stay in the body longer than the other selective enzyme inhibitors. It promotes erection within 30 minutes and enhances the ability to achieve erection for up to 36 hours. Common side effects of selective enzyme inhibitors include headache, reddening of the face and neck (flushing), indigestion, and nasal congestion. Cialis may cause muscle aches and back pain, which usually resolve on their own within 48 hours. Yohimbine improves erections for a small percentage of men. It stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is linked to erection, and may increase libido. It is necessary to take the medication for 6 to 8 weeks before determining whether it will work or not. Yohimbine has a stimulatory effect and side effects include elevated heart rate and blood pressure, mild dizziness, nervousness, and irritability. Yohimbine s effects have not been studied thoroughly, but some studies suggest that 10% to 20% of men respond to treatment with the drug. Read more

Would hypertension meds help me feel better? -

I’ve been having a problem controlling my blood pressure. My reading was 160/84 two weeks ago and my doctor recommended that I get off of oral contraceptives, Zyrtec-D and start eating a low sodium diet to get it down. There is also a family history of hypertension in my family. I took his advice and went to the doctor again on Saturday and the reading was 130/70 which was down significantly from the firs reading. He took it again and it shot up to 150/90 after talking about the possibly of going on hypertension medication if I can’t keep it at that level. I been taking Celexa to help with my stress, but I’m worried about taking hypertension medication at 39. How much of a difference would I feel if I started taking it? Would it relieve the tightness in my chest when I get stressed out? Thanks.

i think it s important to find the cause, but you could trial a beta blocker whilst adjusting - if your bp stays normal while on it,and your body agrees with it you ll feel a lot better.Bp being in a safer range will prevent undue worry. 39 is not an unusual age to be on a bb Chest tightness can be relived by Bp lowering but some beta blockers can make it worse-it s a descision to make with your doc as he/she knows your body as a whole.-a low dose bb can stop the adrenaline surge when stressed out thus it could help the tightness from happening Check for Asthma!

i have hypertension and take avalide which is part diuretic? -

Your question isn t clear. Yes, your avalide has a mild diuretic in it. If your kidney test was significantly elevated, then it probably wasn t from not eating/drinking that morning. It was more of a long term thing.

Why my hand trembles sometimes? is it got to do with hypertension or highblood pressure? -

i need an experts advice.. plz tq and wad should i do? :(

For expert advice, go see a doctor. Could be a neurological issue, could be hypoglycemia. My child s hands tremble due to having seizures. You might simply need to build upper arm strength to help diminish the trembling. There s too many factors to chance letting it go without asking a doctor.

i get shaky with low blood pressure, but you might want to check out Parkinson s disease.

it could be, but you might have something much more serious, that s why you should see a doctor. and by the way, high blood pressure is the same as hypertension.

i get high blood pressure sometimes and my face flushes so that is how i know ask your dr to order a cat scan or MRI to rule out something serious. have you started a new med yet? if so give it a few more days if the trembling doesnt stop call your dr

exposure of your hands in cool air might be the reason.

It could be anything, too much cafeeine, not enough sleep, etc. See a doctor if you are worried.

It could be blood pressure, it could be too much caffeine, it could be dehydration. Many causes. If you are concerned ask your doctor.

not to be rude, but go to an expert for expert advice...we can not see or diagnose you from anything you say here, nor do we know your health history or any variables. it could be a million things from eps to sugar to essential tremor (have it--it s annoying) to nerves...you d need to ask your personal physician

i m not an expert but i suffer this occaisionally too. I think for me it is low blood sugar try eating some food
