My 500lb friend with diabetes.? -

A little bit about her. Shes a diabetic, hypertension, needs oxygen and basically she has all of the above... But yesterday she had water blisters behind her arms... ( I call it the wings) Her arm is swollen, and it looks like big water bags. Why is this forming on her? She doesn t want to go to the emergency because she went already 4 times in a month. And basically her condition is very bad that the dr s say theres nothing more we can do for you. Just try to live. and I just want to know if anybody knows about this condition and can tell me some facts so I can just scare her a bit so she can JUST GO!

it sounds like weeping of the skin when fluid starts third spacing out of the vessels and into the extracellular areas. It greatly increases the risk of pressure ulcers and skin breakdown. just try to keep the areas dry as possible

It s noble that you care about her friend, but you can not change her behavior or her attitude. You can t scare her into changing, she knows what s going on. She has lost her self-esteem and may be wallowing in depression. She needs therapy. There are treatment centers for really heavy people, and that s what she needs, but this she must do for herself. You can offer incentives - if you were a little lighter we could go to (Aruba, the theater in NY, hiking etc).

I agree this sounds like edema, which she might need compression wraps to treat. She does sound like the ideal sort of candidate for weight loss surgery - it was invented to help people trapped by this kind of super morbid obesity. Calm down and just be her friend - offer to take her to the appointment and do what you can to get her there to the doc s...

Scare her with one word.....DEATH!! she should really change doctors.. there is so much now a days that can be done to help her.

She may be developing edema, a condition common in obese people and even some pregnant women as well. Not sure of the treatments, you can look up quot;edemaquot; and go from there. Has her doc not suggested bariatric surgery? (stomach stapling) This is a very effective method for the morbidly obese because it reduces the size of the stomach, thereby increasing the feeling of satiety even after very little food and severely reducing the urge to eat. Many insurers are covering some of the cost now. I agree, trying to get her to exercise is a moot point right now, she is way beyond conventional weight loss methods. There are also clinics for the super obese such as the Brookhaven Obesity Clinic that might be a good resource for her. href="rel="nofollow">
