19 years of age and suffering from hypertension -

I m currently a Uni student and just about a month ago, I felt very sick. I went to the doctor to see what medication he may provide me. The doctor measured my blood pressure, and I was extremely shocked when it was measured at 200/100 - so was the doctor shocked. He referred me to a specialist. Days before I attended the specialist, I went to seek more opinions from other doctors and to take my blood pressure measurement again. It was still high, measured at 170/95. When the day arrived to go see the specialist, he asked me if I drink, smoke or consume any drugs and I said quot;Noquot;. The specialist measured my blood pressure, and the measurement came up 114/85. The specialist requested me to take a container with me home to full it up with urine. Two weeks later, I got back my results and everything was fine. Weeks later I started again to feel very sick, experiencing dizziness and my head was in very bad pain - I have never experience such bad headaches before in my life, not as worse as this one. I went to the doctors for the ninth time and the doctor measured my blood pressure and pulse (BP at 150/100 and Pulse at 127PM) - the doctor requested me to go to the hospital. Hours of waiting, and doctors keep taking samples and tests they came up with the conclusion that I have genetic blood pressure and that it will affect me in 2 to 5 years time. Now I m not sure if it will affect me, just nee some opinions here... Sorry for such a long story...

I m sorry to hear your so stressed, sweetie. I suggest you go back to the specialist as you will probably need medication to control it. A 24 hour blood pressure monitor can be worn and this tests amp; records your PB regularly over this time for a better assessment. It might also be worth having a blood test to check your hormones as these can sometimes effect blood pressure. If you suffer these headaches and blood pressure you should go to the emergency room as these symptoms of dizziness, headache or slurred speech, muscle weakness could mean a stroke. It is very important that you don t take any drugs or alcohol (not that you do) because this would effect your results. This should be under control before you take the pill as this can make it worse. It would also be a good idea to have a CT scan as this will give the doctors a clear look at you whole body for a bleed, or other underlying issues. In the mean time try to practice relaxation or meditation to keep your stress levels low while you seek a medical solution. We wish you all the best, good luck, and if you can keep us posted as we are worried for you! Take care.

Thanks people for your support and concerns. No doctor told me that I should go on Medications and that my blood pressure goes up and down. Worse thing is that the doctors from Bankstown hospital told me that my body stresses without me realizing. Report Abuse

Oh Honey you poor thing this sounds very frightening. I have absolutely no idea, but I hope all works out for you. What about a stress test, you know stress does amazing things to our body, and things like this happen before we get really sick, lack of sleep, stress, constipation, intense migraines, dizziness, diarrhoeaa, vomitting etc, so honey just go over the last 6-12 mths and see if you can see a pattern, if so I do feel it is stress/anxiety/panic attacks, I may be wrong, but I doubt it. Good Luck, and let me know what happens. Minny :-)

High blood pressure could be predisposed by hereditary and race. (It runs in family s and African Americans are prone to it) It could also be enhanced by age, and what you eat (salty foods) or by your weight (if your overweight). It could also go up due to nervousness, such as going to the Dr. If left untreated, causes strokes and heart attacks. 200/100 is an emergency but 114/85 is good. It looks like you are at risk and should be watched. You will most likely be put on medications, which you will have to take every day. Its no big deal, and most have no side affects, and it will allow you to live disease free well into old age.

So sorry! Stress of University can cause high blood pressure. It is the hours students typically spend bent over books and stressing if they are learning or not. Genetics do have a lot to do with it too. They didn t put you on some sort of tablet to try to normalize your blood pressure? I would have thought the first doctor would have done that. Mine is 130/70 but the doctors want it to be under 120/65 so when it isn t there, they add another pill to the mix or double what I am already taking.. You are aiming at a stroke. Try to destress as much as possible. There are lots of websites with exercises and breathing techniques for destressing.
