When a person has white coat hypertension , how then does the Dr. decide what medication to give? -

I m a pharmacist and most doctors I know tell thier patients to buy a home BP moniter or use one thats almost in every major drug store nowadays If the readings are consistantly high , they will either control it by diet or by a light medication such as a diuretic depending of course on the readings If it IS white coat syndrome ....there s not really much to worry about....It s just the body responding to stress

Tell your doctor, silly.....it s probably nothing he hasn t heard before. Just ask him to remove his white coat so it will make you more comfortable talking him/her. I amp; my daughter see a neurologist that no longer wears a white coat and also got rid of florescent lighting in the exam room because I pointed out that the bright light triggers my migraines that he s treating me for in the first place. Health care is very expensive and you are the patient! You are the one paying for his time so let him know that his coat makes you uncomfortable. Problem solved. It may be awkward at first but that too will pass. I m a pro of telling medical personel what to do and how to di it.

Generally there is no medication prescribed for white coat hypertension. Have, or take you blood pressure somewhere besides the doctors office. Often you doctor will have you keep a record of your home blood pressures. If they are normal your doctor will just have you monitor it at home.
