HELP! 10 POINTS TO BEST ANSWER!!!!? -

who gets tested for blood pressure? which client group (eg. infants, pregnant women) get tested for hypertension (high blood pressure) and why? thanks x

Loads of people get tested for numerous reason. Middle aged to older persons are at an increased risk of suffering with hypertension which can have a knock on effect for ie renal failure, heart failure, diabetes. Ladies using the contraceptive medication should get their Bp taken at every consultation with a doctor or nurse, pregnant women should get routinely checked because high blood can cause and be caused by numerous conditions.

Your question was specific to waht group: infants and pregnant women. That s why I concentrated on those two groups. For pregnant women: What are those conditions? I guess you didn t want to know why? Report Abuse

Checking the blood pressure of pregnant women will reassure them to expect a healthy pregnancy and birth. If the placenta is not functioning properly it could be a potential danger to the health of the mother and fetus. Abnormalities can lead to conditions such as preeclampsia, which is maternal high blood pressure, stillbirth or the need for a pre-term delivery Pregnancy–related hypertension—existing high blood pressure can predispose some women to develop problems when they become pregnant. This is called pre-existing chronic hypertension. Also, some women first develop hypertension when they are pregnant. There are several types of this pregnancy–induced hypertension, sometimes called gestational hypertension. Either type of high blood pressure can harm the mother s kidneys and other organs, and it can cause low birth weight and early delivery. Preeclampsia is a serious condition of pregnancy and is related to increased blood pressure and protein in the mother s urine (as a result of kidney problems). Preeclampsia affects the placenta, and it can affect the mother s kidney, liver, and brain. When preeclampsia progresses and seizures develop, the condition is known as eclampsia—the second leading cause of maternal death in the United States. Preeclampsia is also a leading cause of fetal complications, which include low birth weight, premature birth, and stillbirth. Most women who develop signs of preeclampsia are closely monitored to lessen or to avoid related problems. Treatment is focused on reducing water retention and lowering blood pressure to normal limits. Blood pressure in low-birth-weight children younger than 3 years of age not only can be measured but should be, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have found. Blood pressure has not been screened routinely in children with very low birth weights because the measurements were viewed as not feasible or unreliable in infants and toddlers; however, evidence has shown that low-birth-weight infants and premature babies- might develop hypertension later in life. Measuring and validating blood pressure in this population really has not been addressed,” said Dr. Charles Rosenfeld, professor of pediatrics at UT Southwestern and one of the study’s authors. “This is unfortunate because the earlier that hypertension is identified, the sooner appropriate medications and lifestyle changes can be introduced to stop the development of dangerous complications.” The researchers found that just as in adults, children’s blood pressure is affected by their state of mind: Infants who were calm for at least one of the measurements had significantly lower blood pressures than those who were fussy or crying for both.

Infants will be tested in the early weeks of birth to make sure they do not suffer from any abnormalities (there are situations where some children my suffer from hypertension from an early age of from heart disease) Pregnant women are also tested to avoid hypertension. You must understand that during this period of pregnancy emotions (e.g anxiety) tend to be high causing high blood pressure and the same time towards birth the body tends to produce hormones that speed up the blood pressure and this is of concern because during birth the women bleeds a lot and that coupled with high blood pressure could be fatal as a lot of blood maybe lost than maybe replaced

pregnant women... it s because they are more prone to hypertension than babies... but both can be tested... kindly answer mine as well... thanks! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...
