Blood pressure sitting and standing? -

My mother, who s 90 and has regular hypertension, and also has to deal with a leaky heart valve and tightening of the aortic wall, showed an unusual symptom yesterday. Her BP readings, professionally taken, were 185/102 (seated), 140/90 (standing). I understand there s commonly a slight difference between standing and sitting readings but am I right to think this is a level of difference that s matter for concern ? She is taking prescribed medication for BP. Any informed ideas welcome - more than !

This condition is called quot;Postural/Orthostatic Hypotensionquot; Definition: blood pressure drops more than 20/10 when changing from a sitting or lying position to standing up An extract from mayoclinic regarding causes of the condition: quot;Postural hypotension can occur for a variety of reasons including dehydration, prolonged bed rest, pregnancy, diabetes, heart problems, burns, excessive heat, large varicose veins and certain neurological disorders. !!!### A number of medications can also cause postural hypotension, particularly drugs used to treat high blood pressure — diuretics, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitorsquot; I cant say this condition is completely normal or what since it can cause dizziness or even fainting. And on top of that, it seems that the hypertension is poorly controlled. So I suggest your mom go back to see the doctor for evaluation, tell him the hypertension is not controlled, and that she also got postural hypotension (though asymptomatic?). And let the doctor do the rest :) good luck! --------------------------- ur welcome :p Anything above 140/90 would be labelled as quot;Hypertensionquot; So your mom got postural hypotension, but she also got hypertension even on standing and on medication :) Anything below approximately 90/60 would be regarded as hypotension
