This may sound a little weird but...? -

I notice that the vein in my neck throb and is very visible with EVERY heartbeat. It is very noticeable, and a little uncomfortable. Also, could this be the cause gt; I have 3 leaky heart valves, and hypertension.

Your pulse is the throbbing of your arteries. The carotid arteries are in your neck towards the sides (but you have already discovered them). Your pulse is also the frequency of your heart beat (throb). In some cases the leaky valves and hypertension can be related to your discomfort and awareness of the pulse in your neck. If this is something new and your doctor is not aware of it, you really should have a talk with him. If you ve already mentioned it, then I m sure he s explained how they may be connected (and if not, ask him to explain next time you see him). You have had a cardiac workup, correct? When you are overly aware of it (every beat) and it feels uncomfortable, this is a little more than normal. Tension, stress, and other causes are also possible, but it s best to check with your doctor.

Yes, distention in the neck veins can indicate a cardiac insufficiency (in pumping blood) and raised hypertension. When you ve seen your doctor, havent you noticed her/him touching your chin and turning your head to one side and then the other looking at your neck? Common, common examination often not noticed by a patient. See your doctor.

It is your pulse. People have pulses in their necks, it s not abnormal.
