Frusemide reduces Sodium amp; Potassium and increases uric acid level. What to do in such a case for HTN control? -

I have a problem of Hypertension. I am obese (BMI=32+) and Hypothyroid. I also have high level of Uric Acid (6.5). I have been advised to consume Losartan Potassium 500mg and Frusemide 40mgm. daily till my BP becomes normal. I am afraid that consuming Frusemide will create an imbalance in my Sodium amp; Potassium levels, and also increase Uric acid. Please suggest what to do in such a case ?

It will not increase your uric acid levels. If you keep yourself well hydrated, you will not have an imbalance in your electrolytes. Also, eating a banana a day will help keep your potassium up. Unless you want to continue to have your doctor add medication after medication to control your blood pressure, you need to start eating a more healthy diet and begin a regular exercise program (walking is easiest - start slowly with short distances and gradually increase your distance and pace until you are walking a minimum of 30 minutes per day). Then, you can reduce your weight and your blood pressure. When starting on Furosemide, your doctor will probably have you have some blood drawn in a few weeks to monitor your potassium levels. Decreasing the amount of protein consumed in your diet will also help reduce your uric acid levels.

Since you are taking a diuretic daily and also potassium the doctor supposed to take a blood test monthly to see the Sodium amp; potasssium levels. So don t worry .but in case to prevent your potassium to get lower eat halve a banana a day.

Losartan is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Losartan is in a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It works by blocking the action of certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels so blood flows more smoothly. Furosemide, a water pill, is used to reduce the swelling and fluid retention caused by various medical problems, including heart or liver disease. It is also used to treat high blood pressure. It causes the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine. Consult your doctor.

Blood work before, after starting and routinely per MD orders will help get a baseline then medications can be changed to correct any changes. Metabolic panel and Renal panel.

well, you want to get rid of the sodium, and the doctor is replacing your potassium, I am surprised he didn t give you something for the uric acid levels tho. The doctor is trying to get your blood pressure down by reducing the fluid volume in your body, furosemide is a diuretic. Suggest you take the meds and see if they work, also drink lots of water, it will help the meds to their job too.

The word is furosemide aka lasix. Take the meds as prescribed but be sure you eat foods high in potassium. Your uric acid and sodium levels will be fine so long as you watch your salt aka sodium intake. Your doc was aware of everything before he prescribed these meds for you so please take them like you are supposed to and get your blood pressure under control.
