Can dialysis cause dehydration? -

I am a nursing student writing a care plan on a patient who was admitted to the hospital for dehydration. Earlier that day he received dialysis treatment. He also has hypertension, type II diabetes, and chronic renal failure. What do you think caused his dehydration?

If too much fluid is removed during dialysis it may cause dehydration.

You have to have dialysis, So my guess is it did not cause the dehydration. I would say he is not drinking his fluids like he should...

  1. A dialysis patient is weighed before and after treatment. If a patient weighs more than his pre determined "Dry Weight", then water is removed during the treatment to return the patient to his dry weight. A problem can be found in the calibration of the scales.... If the scales weigh "heavy" then too much water will be removed during treatment. There are several stages of dehydration.... from cramps to vomiting, to death. If your patient was vomiting or worse, then check the scales.
